Our Association...
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of maple sugaring in Maine.
We support ongoing research into the many factors affecting our member farms, including production practics, quality control, environmental concerns, land development pressures and long term tree health.
- The average maple tree isn't tapped until it is almost forty years old. Tapping yournger trees can often harm them.
- The average fory-year-old tree will yield about 40 quarts of sap per season, just enough to make one quart of pure maple syrup.
- Somerset County in Northern Maine is th e largest maple producing county in the United States with 1,250,000 taps.
- A gallon of pure maple syrup will weigh about 11 pounds.
- Sap can only be harvested while it's moving through the tree trunk. The sugar in sap is stored as starch throughout the year. During the spring, the warm days and cold nights help change these starches to sugars and flow of sweet sap begins.
- Maine is 2nd in maple production in the United States.
